～Kyobashi Modern, renewing the style of Edo into the modern era～
Rivaling the famous Nihonbashi bridge, the Kyobashi bridge maintained its significance as the first bridge to be crossed on the Tokaido road, a highway stretching from Nihonbashi towards Kyoto.
Hiroshige Utagawa’s ukiyo-e wood block print “Kyobashi Take-gashi” from his famed series “Meisho Edo Hyakkei” (One Hundred Famous Views of Edo) was created as a symbol of this significance.
In reverence of this history and culture, Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyobashi strives to express the history of Kyobashi and culture of Edo in a contemporary style through the design concept of Kyobashi Modern.
The exterior has a sharp, straight-line design, reminiscent of the bamboo riverside depicted in the Ukiyo-e woodblock print “Kyobashi Take-gashi”.
Under the concept “Style of Edo” in relation to the culture of Kyobashi, elements of modern Japan, are incorporated throughout the first floor entrance, such as the black and white checkerboard motifs on the walls, and stone floors evocative of the Nobedan stone paths of Japanese gardens.
Amidst the distinctly business-centered streets of current day Kyobashi, these bring to mind the bustling image of Kyobashi of old Edo, back when it was teeming with merchants.Also be sure to take a moment to admire the bronze glass checkerboad design of the elevator hall walls, as well as the cedar board ceiling.
The interior of our hotel embodies a simple and modern interpretation of the style of old Edo, selecting the following core elements of the “Kyobashi Modern” concept: “活” (life), “樂” (comfort / fun), and “和” (harmony / Japan).Our guest rooms exhibit a design based around a rosewood color scheme and founded on the simple yet refined culture of the Edo masses.This creates an impressive space in which both foreign and domestic travelers will have no trouble relaxing.
In the past, a game known as “hanji-e” (picture puzzles) was popular throughout Edo. It is a game where you look at a painting and try to determine what it means.As an homage to the culture of the common people of old Edo, on the headboard of each room we have represented the words “Kyobashi” and “Have a great trip” using images of “bridge,” “horse,” “trip,” and “tail.”
