These avenues are two of Sendai’s largest main streets, featuring picturesque tree-lined sidewalks that emphasize the city’s status as a “forest capital.” This is the area where Aoba Festival and Tanabata Festival host their main celebrations.

Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle)

This castle was home to the illustrious Date clan of the Sendai Domain. The original castle building burned down during the Meiji Period (1868-1912), but you can still view the ruins of where it once stood. There is a museum nearby and the area has a very historic feel.

Zuihoden

Zuihoden is a mausoleum housing the remains of one of Japan’s most famous feudal lords, Date Masamune, and his heirs. It was rebuilt in 1979 after burning down during the war. There is a museum as well as various other mausoleums and tombs for renowned lords in this heavily-wooded area.

Sendai Anpanman Children’s Museum and Mall

This is an interactive museum and mall dedicated to the beloved children’s cartoon hero Anpanman. “Baikin’s Secret Base,” the section dedicated to his arch enemy Baikinman, is particularly popular with kids.

Yagiyama Benyland

This is one of the top theme parks in the Tohoku area, boasting a thrilling 360-degree loop roller coaster, a Ferris wheel, and a Merry-Go-Land that is great for younger kids. There are roughly 30 attractions in the park, so be sure you have plenty of time to to enjoy them all.

Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium

This aquarium is filled with fascinating exhibits and great opportunities to interact with marine animals from around the world. It has one of the best live performances of any aquarium in the Tohoku region and even boasts a section that recreates the local sea off of Japan’s Sanriku coast.

Mitsui Outlet Park Sendai Port

This is the largest outlet mall in the Tohoku region and features around 120 stores stocking domestic and international brands. There’s a food court offering a range of cuisine, souvenir shops, a large Ferris wheel, and a kids’ play area too so it’s a great place to spend the whole day!

Home to the Tohoku Rakuten Eagles team, this stadium not only offers the chance to see some amazing games, with box seats ideal for groups, but it also has a small adjacent amusement area called Smile Glico Park. There are often opportunities to meet and greet players from the home team.
