As the biggest station in the Kyushu region It's said that all lines in the prefecture stop at Hakata Station. The station makes a great base to explore Japan as it's conveniently connected to the whole region and the rest of the country, with the Fukuoka City Subway offering a 5 minute ride to the airport. The region boasts a strong food culture and this is evident within the station building there are plenty of shopping areas and restaurants, where you can grab authentic Hakata cuisine and souvenir snacks.

The Canal City shopping complex is the hub of fashion in Fukuoka, it's home to cosmetics, clothing, home goods and a whole variety of different stores. There are also wide variety of restaurants including Japanese, Chinese and European cuisine as well as casual ramen joints and chic cafes. You can even find a movie theater and amusement facilities. The shopping complex is architecturally unique as a lively canal runs through the site where fountains are used to signal the time, this bustling waterway is host to daily events and live music.

Known as 'Okushida san' by locals, this temple is located in Hakata and enshrines three gods; Kushidagu, Daishingu and Giongu. This temple is best known for Hakata Gion Yamakasa, a traditional Japanese fastival which takes place in July every year, this lively festival has been designated as an Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage and important national cultural heritage. The Yamakasa, elaborate decorated floats which are paraded through the city on the shoulders of local residents, are on display at the shrine throughout the year.

This temple was opened by Enni, a monk from the Kamakura era, and is said to be the birthplace of Udon and Soba noodle making. The monk Enni brought powder grinding techniques from Sou, an ancient Chinese region, then dispersed the noodle making technique throughout Japan, changing the national cuisine dramatically. The monk Enni is also closely linked to the origin of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival, as during epidemics the monk would be carried out through the city on an alter, splashing sacred water to purify the region. During the festival in July, Kiyomichi, round sacred paths are creating before the temple to allow the Yamakasa floats to be turned around infront of the temple as an act of dedication.

This temple belongs to a group of Kyushu Shingonshu, a sect of Buddhism. It is said that Kobodaishi, who undertook religious training in an ancient region of China, began to develop Mikkyo religion here in Japan. This temple is the oldest temple established by Kobodaishi in Japan, and was once located along the sea coast. The temple was relocated by Kuroda Tadayuki, the second feudal lord of Chikuzen Fukuoka, and remains in the same place to this dat. The temple is home to a famed Heian era statue of a multiarmed daity which is recognized as one of Japan's Imortant National Cultural Properties and the Rokkkakudo building designated as a Cultural Property by Fukuoka City.

This is the oldest temple among the 2200 Sumiyoshi shrines that exist across Japan and is used to worship and pray for luck, safe travels, protecting ships and warding off evil spirits. The main hall is registered on the list of nationally important cultural propertyies as it was constructed in the early Edo period by Kuroda Nagamasa, the first feudal lord of Chikuzen Fukuoka. The temple's unique construction is called Sumiyoshi Tsukuri and we can find influences of an ancient shine contruction in the Hameita-bari (a clapped-wood lining) walls painted with whitewash and the straight gabled roof.

Hakataza is Kyushu's largest theatre dedicated to plays, and is found next door to the Hakata Riverain, amusement complex. The theatre offers a wide variety of plays including Kabuki, Musicals, Takarazuka, original pieces and so on, but the theatre is also home to restaurants and food stalls where you can appreciate local seasonal cuisine through a wide variety of bento boxes and limited edition goods and snacks.
